On a personal front, this presentation made me think that I’m really lucky to be doing this new PR course at Falmouth. It also made me think about how vast the world of PR can be. I have always felt that communication is vital when it comes to any kind of organisation and it is in fact the main clog that keeps the wheel turning.

Peter Jones is the Head of communications at BUPA and is responsible for the internal and external communications of the cooperation. For me as a student it was inspiring to hear him speak about his career and the path he took to get there.

Peter started off as a Journalists, this gave him all the skills he needed, he then moved up the “Ladder” to work for British airways doing their entire PR, he then moved on to work in Consultancy at a company called Good Relations, he then went in to high level communication working for Van Pollen after that British Airways got him back, however after 10 years, Peter left wanting to move into the Private Health sector BUPA, he has been there for nine years.

The presentation took the form of a power point, along with some visual aids, including Peter’s own BUPA newspaper and BUPA TV, two cleaver tactics to ensure the internal communication is up to standard

Listening to Peter talk for three hours did make me a tad exhausted. His enthusiasm for the degree I am reading is evident, so I felt like I REALLY want to work in PR but all I have to do now is find my passion and work with what I have. Even though I don’t feel like I was at all inspired to follow in the footsteps of Peter I would say that he has given me a lot more motivation to succeed in the degree and to really enjoy what I’m doing.

Hi Kate,

Thanks for posting and glad Peter opened your mind to some of the myriad possibilities of communications. We will explore many of the other disciplines over the next few weeks/months so you will have lots of opportunities to think about how you'd prefer to specialise.
